About Our School

Melpark Primary is a government school in the leafy suburb of Melville. It caters for learners from Grade R to Grade 7.

The language of instruction is English, and the first additional language is Afrikaans.

Each grade has 3 classes with about 30-35 learners in each class. These classes are all named after the register class teacher.

There are about 833 learners who are guided through their foundation years by the staff, who are all qualified, experienced, and committed. It has a nurturing, supportive environment to provide the learners with every opportunity to achieve academic, cultural, and sporting excellence. The school also offers learners multiple opportunities to thrive in the classroom, on the sports field, and beyond the school as well.

The school competes in the league matches in the various codes of sport. Learners have the opportunity to go up to the provincial level in Athletics, Netball and Soccer.

An emphasis is placed on reading by equipping each classroom with a mini library, and a reading period is incorporated into the timetable to encourage reading. Computer classes are offered to learners from Grade 1 to 7.

Apart from these activities, the school offers counselling services from two organisations, viz. Sophiatown Community Psychological Services and UJ Psychology Department. The school has also employed the services of a Remedial therapist to assist learners who experience difficulties. For added support we also work with the Link Programme, which assists learners with Reading and Mathematics from Grade 1-3.
